After a politician has urged he wants to remove Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s titles, fans are wondering if the government will see the notion through.
Prince Harry and Meghan still have their Sussex royal titles, they didn’t lose that when they left The Firm in 2020. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles were a gift from the late Queen when the pair tied the knot a year before. Conservative MP Bob Seely is proposing to change laws, where Meghan Markle and Harry could only be referred to as Mr and Mrs.
What are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s titles now?

The couple is still known as The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The duo agreed to stop using His and Her Royal Highness when they stepped back as working royals in 2020.
However, it took three years for the palace website to be updated. Instead, this was adapted in the summer of this year, which experts believed was part of King Charles‘ plan to slim down the monarchy.
This ties in with their interview with pal Oprah, where they raised concerns over their children. Meghan had claimed she was told little Archie wouldn’t become a ‘prince’ but she had fears over his security and safety. However, as part of the lineage and royal protocol, it was actually due to his place in line to the throne.
When Charles’ coronation came, also crowning his new Queen Consort Camilla, it promoted William and Kate Middleton to the Prince and Princess of Wales. Archie and Lilibet, then moved up a step to six and seven, respectively. They then were named Prince and Princess.
Currently, the line of succession starts with Prince William, his son George, daughter Charlotte and then young Louis. Harry is fifth in line to the throne, if anything were to happen to the four above him.
Can Harry and Meghan Keep their titles – even with all the royal drama?
As the law currently stands, yes they can. But there’s more to it than that. Their Sussex titles were gifted to the pair after their wedding five years ago from the Queen.
Charles hasn’t taken this away from them after stepping up to the throne. It’s also doubtful he’d make this move, despite their ‘relationship growing apart’ over the past few years.
Even though the politician wants to strip Harry and Meghan of their titles, it’s likely it won’t pass in government. The decision will come down to The Firm, who prefer to keep private matters just that – private. If the bill did pass, it would become a complicated process and who’s telling if the monarch would step in.
It’s not clear if public option will have a role, especially as Meghan and Harry’s popularity has plummeted with the drama unfolding over recent years.
